Nepenthes Lowii

Nepenthes lowii is one of the most unusual species because of it's unique upper pitchers that look like wildly colored toilet bowls for birds. The upper pitchers are very hard and woody. They have a highly constricted waist and almost no peristome at all. N. lowii is believed to have adapted to living on bird droppings instead of using it's pitchers to catch insects. A white substance is secreted on the lid of the pitchers which may be a laxative that birds and other small animals eat. In the wild, it is usually an epiphytic plant and will rarely produce lower pitchers. In cultivation, N. lowii grows quite well as a terrestial plant. Despite it's conditions, it is usually a slow grower although a few select clones do exhibit some added vigor.

N. lowii Care

Nepenthes lowii is not a very difficult species to care for if it is provided with the proper conditions. It should receive typical highlander conditions of days at 70-80° F and 50-60° F at night. N. lowii will also appreciate high humidity conditions and an airy, well-draining soil mixture. Live long fibered sphagnum moss or a mixture of dried sphagnum moss and an ingredient for drainage is quite acceptible.
