Nepenthes Aristolochioides - Carnivorous Tropical Pitcher PlantNepenthes Aristolochioides is an endemic species to Sumatra and is best known for it's nearly vertical pitcher opening.
Carnivorous Plant HistoryWillem Meijer, on August 5, 1956, was the first person to collect N. aristolochioides although the specimen of this interesting species was overlooked for more than 30 years. The botanist, Joachim Nerz, found out about this plant in 1988 and organized a trip to Sumatra in 1996 to recollect the pitcher plant.
Carnivorous Plant DescriptionNepenthes aristolochioides produces small rosettes and then begins climbing, reaching a height of 8 m. Both the upper and lower pitchers have a near vertical pitcher mouth, but the upper pitchers can reach 15 cm in height compared to a height of 7 cm for the lower pitchers. N. aristolochoides produces offshoots on old climbing stems. Pitcher colors range from white to reddish and are covered in many reddish-brown specks with a dark red peristome. The wild populations exhibit little variation and as a result there have not been any described varieties. |
